Gerhard Cromme

Gerhard Cromme studied law at the University of Münster and the University of Lausanne, as well as economics at the Sorbonne and Harvard, and later earned a doctorate in law at Münster.

He began his career at the Compagnie de Saint-Gobain (1971-1986), where he became Deputy General Delegate for Germany. In 1986, he joined the Krupp Group and became Chairman of the Management Board of Krupp in 1989. After the merger with Thyssen in 1999 (creating ThyssenKrupp), he was Chairman of the Management Board until 2001 and then Chairman of the Supervisory Board until 2013. He is currently Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Siemens AG.

He has been a member of the supervisory or administrative boards of major European companies (Allianz, Lufthansa, BNP Paribas, Suez, Volkswagen, ABB, Thales, Saint-Gobain, Axel Springer). Vice-President of the Federation of German Industry (BDI) from 1991 to 2000, he was President of the European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT) from 2001 to 2005 and President of the Deutscher Corporate Governance Kodex from 2001 to 2008. He also co-chaired the Franco-German working group “Competitiveness and Growth in Europe”.

Recipient of the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour in 2015 for his contributions to Franco-German relations.
