Presentation

The International Relations Directorate of Diputació de Barcelona has organised the Conference on the European Union since 1995. Our objective is to promote a political space for reflection on the major challenges currently facing Europe, and their impact on local governments. Thus, special attention is paid to the role exercised by municipalities in facing major European challenges and how they can bring the European integration process closer to citizens.

In each edition, the conference has focussed on one main theme. For the past five years we have addressed issues such as: Europe and its cities, European citizenship, the fight against climate change, the new agenda for Europe and its territories, and the European Union for Innovation.

The seventeenth session will be devoted to the major challenges currently faced by the EU, with particular attention being paid to the economic crisis, the situation in the Mediterranean, EU action in the world and its impact on our local level. Diputació de Barcelona would like to bring this discussion to the local level through the participation of local authorities and citizens in the European integration process. For this reason, we have decided to provide a space to debate these major issues, where speakers of international, institutional, academic, and political prestige can offer their points of view.
