The costs of free trade – closed factories, unemployed workers and the local economy – are easy to see. Less obvious are the benefits, higher quality goods, more choices and a better standard of living. The distribution of these benefits of the liberalization of the world and the raising of questions about the fairness and viability of the world. The prospects of a trade war between the US and China, Europe and the US has served to intensify these debates.
