The fifth session of the Notre Europe Academy takes place on the 9th of February, at the Charles Leopold Mayer Foundation, 38, rue Saint-Sabin. Participants have the opportunity to debate on the role played by the European Union in the world, whether diplomatically or as regard to its defence strategy.

“Soft Power”, “Economic giant but political dwarf”… the European Union is regularly described as having atypical external relations. Elisabeth Guigou, former French Minister of Justice, former member of the National Assembly and former president of the European affairs Committee of the national Assembly and former member of Jacques Delors’ cabinet, shares her experience and view on the topic. Nicole Gnesotto, expert in defence issues, introduces the Common Foreign and Security Policy, its genesis, current challenges and latest developments.

    Seminar with Nicole Gnesotto, “European Union” chair at the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts (Conservatoire national des arts et métiers, CNAM)

The afternoon is dedicated on the future of the European Union, its governing system and its institutions. In partneship with Euradionantes, the first half of the afternoon is broadcasted on their frequency, an occasion to not only argue greatest challenges the European Union has to face today, either politically, environmentally or institutionally but also to inform and to get informed on European issues as a citizen. Christine Verger, former director of National Parliaments Relation Direction at the Directorate-General for the Presidency of the European Parliament and former General Secretary of the Jacques Delors Institute, then briefly introducse the institutionnal setting and functioning of the European Union, which lays the ground for the next session.
