From day one, the European Green Deal (EGD) has been the flagship of the Von der Leyen Commission. As promised, the landmark climate law committing Europe to 2050 carbon neutrality was delivered within the first 100 days, followed by the new EU industrial policy and circular economy action plan. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 crisis unfolded in the meantime, quickly bringing the world to a virtual standstill and necessarily disrupting every other long-term policy issue in the process. With due deference and respect to the severity of the current health crisis, we will discuss how the European Green Deal can serve as a green stimulus package, turning the current sanitary and economic crisis into an opportunity to transform our economies in line with the 2050 climate neutrality target.
