Background:
Migration is now at the heart of Europe’s major challenges. Armed conflicts, climate disasters, and geopolitical crises have marked the past decade, from Syria to Ukraine, via West Africa and the Mediterranean. While public debate and policy responses have intensified, the climate has hardened: cultural fears, and issues of integration and reception have fueled misconceptions and political instrumentalization. In the face of such discourse, one question arises: what are the facts?
Key Questions:
- What are the figures? Can we really speak of a “flood” of migrants?
- What are the real challenges of migration policies: reception, integration, regulation?
- What options are currently being considered at the European level, and are there divergences between Member States and between institutions?
Speaker(s):
Monique Pariat is Advisor on Migration at the Jacques Delors Institute and former Director-General for Migration and Home Affairs at the European Commission. She brings extensive experience in European migration and asylum policy, as well as in EU external relations and neighbourhood policy, having held several senior positions within the European Commission throughout her career.
What are ‘Debunking Webinars’?
These webinars are organised as part of the Académie Notre Europe, the Jacques Delors Institute’s civic and educational initiative for young people. Their aim is to enable young participants to engage with experts and decision-makers on current issues, with the objective of combating disinformation. Migration, enlargement, digital policy and more: a range of topics linked to European challenges will be discussed. The discussions seek to challenge common misconceptions and correct misinformation about the European Union.
