Euroquestions #94 | The EU in a changing geopolitical landscape – Adapting and reacting

As global tensions escalate with the Trump administration, the war in Ukraine, and evolving relations with China, the EU’s strategies and responses are more crucial than ever. Ursula von der Leyen wants to strengthen defense, and European leaders appear to be following suit. The loss of trust in the United States should prompt Europeans to strengthen their relationships with other partners such as Japan, South Korea, and Australia, and to manage their own relations with China more assertively. How can we define the EU’s role as a global actor in the face of figures like Trump and Putin, who openly disdain the European project? Can we finally speak of a powerful Europe, as Emmanuel Macron hoped for in 2017? In an increasingly uncertain globalization context, can the European Union become a force for good?

To discuss these questions, we are pleased to welcome Daniela Schwarzer, member of the Board of Trustees of the Bertelsmann Foundation and the Board of Trustees of the Jacques Delors Institute.
