[FR] EuroQuestions | Trump : A year on, with Gilles Gressani

This event will be held in French

January 20, 2026 marks the first anniversary of Donald Trump’s return to the White House—a return that has profoundly transformed American politics and, more broadly, global geopolitics. In one year, his diplomacy has put the United States’ traditional commitments to the test, calling into question key pillars of the transatlantic framework, whether in trade, security, or international norms—a shift observed with concern by Europeans and their partners.

Although Trump did not end the war in Ukraine within his first hundred days in office, he has nonetheless imposed significant breaks in relations with Europe and in the defense of the principles of international law, as illustrated by recent developments in Venezuela and the tensions surrounding Greenland. In the face of these upheavals, the idea of a more autonomous Europe has returned to the heart of the debate, despite the difficulties Europeans face in reaching agreement among themselves.

To revisit the key events of this first year, draw lessons from them, and open the debate on future prospects—particularly for the European Union—the Jacques Delors Institute is pleased to welcome Gilles Gressani, Director of Le Grand Continent and President of the Geopolitical Studies Group at the École normale supérieure.
