[FR] Euroquestions #1 | Recovery and power: the key words for the new European political season

For the very first edition of ‘Euroquestions’, a new series of short webinars launched by the Jacques Delors Institute, our Director Sébastien Maillard will present the major challenges facing Europe this autumn.
Recovery is clearly the key word this autumn. France will present its plan on 3 September in response to the economic effects of the pandemic. Its financing is based in particular on the agreement reached by the 27 Member States last July to launch a major €750 billion loan. These combined efforts should make it possible to accelerate and provide social support for the ecological transition, orchestrated by the European Green Deal.
The other watchword for Europe, less prominent and less consensual but also important this autumn, is power. The US presidential election on 3 November is taking place against a backdrop of increased rivalry with China, from which the EU must distance itself. Beyond that, Europeans must learn to respond in concert to the strong tensions in their immediate neighbourhood (Belarus, the eastern Mediterranean, Libya, Lebanon, Ukraine, the Sahel, etc.). Not to mention the thorny issue of Brexit.
Behind the challenges of recovery and power, there is ultimately also the challenge of belonging to an ambitious common project. The Conference on the Future of Europe, which is expected to be launched before the end of the year, offers an opportunity to renew it.
