[FR] Euroquestions #13 | Facing Russia: renewing and toughening sanctions, and then what?

Since 2014, the European Union has pursued a policy of sanctions against Russia. Preserving unity among the 27 member states and affirming the EU’s geopolitical stance, this policy now appears to be forced to continue indefinitely. However indispensable they may be, sanctions alone cannot constitute the Union’s ‘Russian policy’: they have not succeeded in curbing the Federation’s external actions, nor have they diverted the regime from its authoritarian trajectory. While the EU cannot lift its sanctions without admitting weakness, it must complement them with a broader and more diversified strategy.

To decipher this geopolitical issue, we will welcome Cyrille Bret, senior lecturer at Sciences Po Paris and author of the forthcoming publication ‘European Union-Russia: renewing and tightening sanctions, and then what?’ for the Jacques Delors Institute.
