[FR] Euroquestions #14 | 2021, European Year of Rail: encouraging Europeans to choose the train

Railways originated in Europe. This European Year of Rail must be an opportunity to make rail transport the key player in clean European mobility, even though its overall share of the various modes of transport has become relatively small. Railways do not have a decarbonisation problem, but rather an attractiveness problem.
Strengthening this attractiveness requires ambitious action at European level, which will necessitate significant public investment, which the European recovery plan should facilitate.
A European Year will not be enough to bring about major change. However, if taken seriously, 2021 could become the year in which essential actions are launched to revive rail in Europe as a major player in the transport network.
We are delighted to welcome Matthias Ruete, Senior Research Fellow at the Jacques Delors Institute, who will present the proposals for a European action plan for rail set out in his publication Making Europeans prefer the train, available on the Jacques Delors Institute website.
