[FR] Euroquestions #16 | Porto Social Summit: three years after Gothenburg, what kind of social Europe?

On 7 and 8 May 2021, the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU is organising a social summit in Porto. Three and a half years after the proclamation of the European Pillar of Social Rights in Gothenburg, this social summit aims to give political impetus at all levels (European institutions, Member States, social partners and civil society) to the implementation of the Pillar and, more specifically, to endorse its action plan, proposed by the von der Leyen Commission last March.
The Commission’s Action Plan presents a set of measures aimed at translating the twenty principles of the European Pillar of Social Rights into concrete initiatives. These include proposals on workers’ rights, minimum wages and incomes, skills development and the fight against discrimination and poverty.
Did the adoption of the European Pillar of Social Rights in 2017 really give new impetus to social Europe? Is the action plan proposed by the Commission up to the task, particularly in the current context? What can we expect from the Porto Social Summit? What are the prospects?
On the eve of this summit, we will discuss these questions with Sofia Fernandes, senior researcher at the Jacques Delors Institute and director of the Notre Europe Academy.
