[FR] Euroquestions #38 | War in Ukraine: What are the consequences for the European agricultural model?

As part of its reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, which will come into force in 2023, the European Union has committed to developing a form of agriculture that is ‘fairer, greener and more results-oriented’. Among the objectives of its ‘farm to fork’ strategy are a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 50% reduction in pesticides by 2030.

However, the war in Ukraine and the resulting halt in exports could cause a ‘hurricane of famines’, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. In this context, increasing European agricultural production to alleviate the emerging food crisis is a subject of debate among Member State leaders and could call into question the ecological objectives that have been set.

Geneviève Pons, Director General of the Jacques Delors Institute think tank in Brussels, will discuss the impact of the conflict in Ukraine on the European agricultural model and its future development.
