[FR] Euroquestions #49 | What about energy poverty in Europe and its challenges in times of inflation?

‘The pre-war era when we had access to abundant and cheap fossil fuels is over […] the coming winters, and not just this one, will be difficult,’ said European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans on 14 September. Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, concerns about European energy supplies and high inflation, the price of energy and European citizens’ access to it is a major challenge for the just transition sought by the European Union. In 2021, more than 30 million Europeans were suffering from energy poverty on the continent. The current rise in energy prices is fuelling a cost-of-living crisis that is hitting low-income households the hardest. What measures are the EU and Member States proposing to combat this phenomenon?

To discuss these issues, we welcome Camille Defard, energy policy researcher at the Jacques Delors Institute, to this edition of Euroquestions.
