On 22 January, Germany and France will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty, which sealed a deep cooperation between the two countries. While the Franco-German partnership is often the driving force behind European integration, the relationship experienced complications in the autumn against a backdrop of profound differences: Germany’s investment plan for its economy, priorities in the energy transition, European defence and reform of the Stability and Growth Pact. How can the Franco-German dynamic be revived to address the European challenges of 2023?
