[FR] Euroquestions #59 | The Migration and Asylum Pact: what about a reform that was never completed?

While Italy has declared a state of emergency on its territory in response to the influx of arrivals on its shores, the European Union has been struggling to reform its Migration and Asylum Pact for several years. This legislative package, presented in September 2020 by the European Commission, aims to reform European asylum policy, including a new balance between solidarity in asylum and responsibility in external border control, as well as strengthening cooperation with migrants’ countries of origin and transit. In November 2022, a 20-point plan was announced by the Commission. However, negotiations between the Council and the European Parliament have been dragging on since then. Can we therefore expect a common position from EU interior ministers by the summer? Is it credible and sufficient to adopt the reform before the European elections in spring 2024, given that the EU has to respond to the upcoming migration challenges (war in Ukraine, global warming)?

We are pleased to welcome Corinne Balleix, member of our migration group and specialist on European Union asylum issues.
