[FR] Euroquestions #90 | 40 years of Val Duchesse: towards a revival of the European Social Dialogue?

Forty years ago, on 31 January 1985, Jacques Delors, one month after becoming President of the European Commission, convened the European social partners at the Val Duchesse Summit to launch the European social dialogue. After a promising start, the social dialogue at European level quickly ran out of steam and its results are disappointing today.

In January 2024, Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the European institutions’ commitment to strengthening social dialogue in order to address the economic, social and environmental challenges facing the European Union today. Dialogue between trade unions and employers is now crucial to finding joint responses to the social challenges posed by the green, digital and demographic transitions. In this context, what kind of recovery is possible today? The social partners are negotiating a new pact, which should be adopted at the end of January, to give new impetus to European social dialogue. What can we expect from it? How can the social partners now play their full role in translating the 20 principles of the European Pillar of Social Rights into concrete initiatives?

And what can we expect from the action plan for the implementation of the Social Rights Pillar that the Commission is due to present in 2025?

We are pleased to welcome Philippe Pochet, Social Affairs Advisor at the Jacques Delors Institute, to discuss these issues.
