Madrid, 10 April 2019 – European Think Thank Summit
Elvire Fabry, Senior Research Fellow at the Jacques Delors Institute, speaks in the panel “Trade Winds or Trade Wars: Which way is the Wind Blowing?”, at the 2019 Summit of European Think Tanks, hosted by the Real Instituto Elcano in Madrid.
The lingering effects of the 2008 economic crisis and the blowback of the unfulfilled promise of globalization in the face of populism, nativism and protectionist sentiments in many countries. The costs of free trade – closed factories, unemployed workers and the local economy – are easy to see. Less obvious are the benefits, higher quality goods, more choices and a better standard of living. The distribution of these benefits of the liberalization of the world and the raising of questions about the fairness and viability of the world. The prospects of a trade war between the US and China, Europe and the US has served to intensify these debates. With this backdrop in mind, the panel will explore the current trade environment; the impact of trade disputes will impact growth and the global economy.n
