Thirty years ago, the Schengen agreement was ratified, followed by th Schengen Convention, in 1990, and its coming into force in 1995. This major step in the European construction led to the borders controls disappearance between Member states. Now gathering 26 countries, the Schengen area is regularly at stake, accused of failing in protecting its members from illegal immigration or terrorism. What assesment can be made of the last three decades? What challenges, current and future, are facing the Schengen area? Can we imagine its disappearance?
