Policy paper 204
Brexit and the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice
With her claim that ‘Brexit means Brexit’, Theresa May has quickly silenced those hoping to avoid or cushion the UK’s departure from the EU. It does, however, not qualify for the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ).
With her claim that ‘Brexit means Brexit’, Theresa May has quickly silenced those hoping to avoid or cushion the UK’s departure from the EU. It does, however, not qualify for the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ). Resulting from a long history of differentiated integration, the UK has never been a full in- or outsider of the AFSJ.
In this paper, Dr. Funda Tekin, Vice Director at Centre for Turkey and EU Studies, University of Cologne and Senior Researcher at Centre international de formation européenne, Berlin, argues that a tailor-made Brexit solution should allow for the UK’s future participation in those policy areas in which a full Brexit would lead to a lose-lose situation.
