Enrico Letta receives a European mandate to think about the future of the internal market

With five months to go before the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first semester of 2024 and in line with the Spanish Presidency and the European Commission, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo commissioned Enrico Letta, former President of the Italian Council and President of the Jacques Delors Institute, to prepare a high-level report on the future of the EU’s internal market. This commission follows the conclusions of the European Council of 29th and 30th June: “calls for an independent High-Level Report on the future of the Single Market to be presented at its meeting of March 2024 and invites the incoming presidencies of the Council and the Commission to take this work forward, in consultation with the Member States”. The report is due to be presented at the March 2024 European Summit in Brussels.

Enrico Letta welcomes this opportunity with great honour, which will enable him to continue the work initiated by Jacques Delors (“Europe 92”), who made the single market the cornerstone of European integration.

To prepare for the challenges of tomorrow, the future internal market requires new stages in its integration, both in financial terms and with a view to future enlargements. It must be able to better adapt its functioning and resilience in times of crisis. Finally, given the brutalization of power relations in the world, the internal market is called upon to serve as a greater lever of power for Europe.

Our think tank and its president are fully mobilised to bring this strategic reflection.
