[FR] Teaching Europe in France

Cementing the European dimension in French secondary school teaching

While a lack of knowledge about how the EU works is a major factor in the French people’s distrust of Europe, the issue of acquiring knowledge and, by extension, education about “Europe” is essential in French secondary schools. On the basis of this academic competence, citizens will then be able to naturally develop civic competence around their own individual convictions and preferences regarding Europe. But, at the very least, education is an essential prerequisite for this, and embedding the European dimension in French education now appears to be a necessity. This report analyses how this European dimension is taken into account in several key subjects – history, civic education, geography and foreign languages – in comparison with the school curricula of other EU countries, with a view to formulating operational recommendations for effective education about Europe.
