Understanding Europe as a place of humanist civilisation remains a prerequisite for giving true meaning to the attempt at unity, and would force us to take the undertaking seriously, not reducing it to a mercantilist or monetary construct, but fully grasping its dual dimension as a social project and a strategic response to the chaos threatening the planet.
In this opinion piece, Pierre Defraigne, Executive Director of the Madariaga-College of Europe Centre, points out that today’s geopolitical challenges are manifold and that only a united Europe will be able to meet them. This united Europe must also enable the revitalisation of democracy.
