The election of a candidate who campaigned on a platform of ‘change’ as the head of the US executive branch has raised many hopes around the world. After eight years of an administration more inclined towards unilateralism than multilateralism, the establishment of the new administration is eagerly awaited.
The successful mobilisation of Europeans in the second half of 2008 – in the face of the Russian-Georgian crisis and the economic and financial crises – and the firm intention of the Czech EU Presidency to maintain the momentum created by France tend to lend credibility to European action on the international stage. These concurrent developments on both sides of the Atlantic call for reflection on the role of EU-US relations.
