[FR] Introductory speech by Jacques Delors at the symposium ‘Cavour the European’ organised by the Ecole Normale Supérieure

It is my honour to write the preface to the symposium organised by the Ecole Normale Supérieure on ‘Cavour, the European and the diplomatic revolution’. It is also a great pleasure for me to introduce my great friend, the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano.

In such a rich life as a militant, intellectual and political leader, how can we find the common thread that organises and explains Giorgio Napolitano’s actions?

I believe I can offer you an answer by drawing a parallel between Cavour, the architect of Italian unity, but also a European, and your distinguished guest here today, whose autobiography, published in 2004, is entitled ‘From the Italian Communist Party to European Socialism’.
