[FR] “The Constitution, a step forward for the European Union” intervention by Jacques Delors

Mouvement Européen France, Paris, 9 April 2005, Intervention by Jacques Delors. The former President of the European Commission comes back on the challenges already taken up by the EU, and on the importance of lui giving it the means for exercising a real influence.

The campaign has already begun, and we would now like to engage in dialogue with those who oppose the treaty, who fall into two categories: right-wing and left-wing sovereignists, who are hostile to European integration, and those who are disappointed in Europe. These people are concerned, in a context of political and social unrest that is worrying for all of us.

What is unacceptable in this campaign is the exploitation of fear, for example by stirring up opposition to the Bolkestein Directive. I will not resort to such scare tactics. I note that the questions raised by our fellow citizens stem from three factors: the enlargement of the European Union, the content of the Treaty, and also a certain ‘French nostalgia’.
