Images of Yugoslavia: Yugoslav cinema and figures of the Other in Europe

Yugoslavia, and more generally the Balkans, are for Western Europe a place that is both close and foreign, a mirror and a foil. The Yugoslav wars of succession in the 1990s brought back the image of the irrational, brutal and bloodthirsty Balkans. The image of an Other in Europe. Through a journey through Yugoslav cinema, Laëtitia Delamare invites us to revisit these clichés and rediscover a complex society whose daily life and myths, developments and obstacles, cities and countryside, hopes and disappointments have been admirably portrayed by Yugoslav filmmakers.
