The European ambition of President Macron and the reactions in Europe to his project

On 1 June 2018, Sébastien Maillard, director of the Jacques Delors Institute, participated in the conference “The Future of the European Union, Challenges and Initiatives”, organized by the University of Geneva. His speech is included in a publication of the Dusan Sidjanski Competences Center for European Studies.

Macron’s European ambition comes from his personal background, while also being inseparable from his position as President of the French Republic. It is for him to make sense of the European project, to promote a Europe-power, a Europe that protects. He has invested so much that he can not afford a defeat in the European elections. We also note that he has relatively few allies really ready to follow him in Europe.
