The end of the political sequence ushered in by the European elections in May 2019, followed by the choice of holders of positions of responsibility within the Union and the composition of the European Commission, provides a welcome opportunity to analyse the political rationale behind the choice of European “governors” for the 2019-2024 cycle. Given the tensions and crises to which it has given rise, this sequence should also lead to the identification of lessons and clarifications conducive to a better functioning of the Union, which is particularly necessary given the acute challenges it faces.
