Protecting without Protectionism?
Adopting key measures such as shielding strategic sectors from foreign investment would raise awareness of a paradigm shift that strives to protect without protectionism.
On 10 May 2017, the European Commission, presented its proposal for “Harnessing globalisation”, initiating a debate with member states on the challenges of changing global economic interdependence.
In this Tribune, Elvire Fabry, senior research fellow at the Jacques Delors Institute:
– analyses the need to strengthen the European consensus on trade and investment policy;
– calls to raise awareness of a paradigm shift that strives to protect without protectionism, by the adoption of key measures such as shielding strategic sectors from foreign investment;
– and proposes a proportionate protection of those strategic sectors.
