This Synthesis looks at the chief elements in the debate on the EU migration strategy, a debate which took place on 24 October 2015 at the Jacques Delors Institute’s href=”https://www.institutdelors.eu/media/listparticipantsescjdioct2015.pdf?pdf=ok” target=””>European Steering Committee meeting. The debate was introduced by Enrico Letta, vice-president of the Jacques Delors Institute and former president of the Council of Ministers of Italy, Daniela Schwarzer, director of the Europe programme at the German Marshall Fund of the United States in Berlin and António Vitorino, president of the Jacques Delors Institute.
This Synthesis focuses on 4 main elements:
1. A European migration agenda disrupted in the short and medium terms;
2. The European institutions in the face of the populist challenge and of their own lack of effectiveness;
3. Germany’s pivotal role;
4. A predictable crisis, but a crisis that can be overcome at the European level.
Following these debates a joint declaration entitled “Schengen is dead? Long live Schengen!” was adopted by our European Steering Committee and published by 15 European media.
