[FR] Euroquestions #26 | Inflation: a new risk for the European economy?

Inflation reached 3.4% in September in the eurozone and ‘will continue to rise this year,’ acknowledged Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), who nevertheless expects it to decline in 2022. Rising energy and raw material prices and supply problems are driving inflation up and threatening the recovery in growth after the sharp economic downturn linked to the pandemic. This increase will also reduce household purchasing power in the coming months and increase pressure on governments to take new compensatory measures (such as the €100 cheque decided in France for low-income households). Should we also expect central banks to raise interest rates if inflationary pressures persist?

We are pleased to welcome Pierre Jaillet, associate researcher in monetary policy at the Jacques Delors Institute and former Director General of Research and International Relations at the Banque de France, who will explain the challenges facing Europe.
