Sophie-Caroline de Margerie is a Councillor of State. She studied at Sciences Po Paris and Paris I, and graduated from the ENA, Voltaire promotion. She began her career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, working in the Cultural Relations Department and the Legal Affairs Department, before joining the Presidency’s diplomatic team in 1988. She served as European Affairs Adviser during the Maastricht Treaty negotiations.
In 1992, she was appointed to the Conseil d’État as Master of Requests, in the Litigation Section and the Finance Section, where she oversees public international law, European law, and civil service matters. She also handles immigration, extradition, and urban planning cases.
She serves on the boards of several cultural institutions, is a member of the French-American Foundation, and sits on the editorial board of Commentaire. She holds a Master’s degree in English literature, has published a biography of Edmond Rostand, and her second book, American Lady, was published by Laffont and in the United States by US Penguin.
