Background:
As the European Union’s enlargement policy has returned to the heart of the European debate, notably since the war in Ukraine, concerns are resurfacing: dilution of the European project, loss of sovereignty, ungovernable institutions, excessive costs…These are all misconceptions that it is time to deconstruct.
Key Questions:
- Does enlargement weaken or strengthen the European Union?
- What are the real costs and actual benefits?
- Does expanding mean giving up European values?
Speaker(s):
Benjamin Couteau has been a Research Fellow at the Jacques Delors Institute’s Greater Europe Centre since November 2022. He specialises in EU enlargement policy, the Western Balkans and Turkey, while his research also focuses on competing foreign influences in the region.
What are ‘Debunking Webinars’?
These webinars are organised as part of the Académie Notre Europe, the Jacques Delors Institute’s civic and educational initiative for young people. Their aim is to enable young participants to engage with experts and decision-makers on current issues, with the objective of combating disinformation. Migration, enlargement, digital policy and more: a range of topics linked to European challenges will be discussed. The discussions seek to challenge common misconceptions and correct misinformation about the European Union.
