[FR] Euroquestions #105 | Can the European Union become a key geopolitical player in preserving democracy?

While the West appears to be undergoing a profound crisis of meaning and cohesion, marked by a growing rejection of its own democratic and liberal foundations, the European Union seems to be the last bastion capable of defending the values that have made the West strong. Faced with the rise of authoritarianism and the erosion of multilateralism, Europe is confronted with a decisive choice: to submit to the geopolitical dynamics dominated by Donald Trump’s United States or to assume an autonomous leadership role, promoting a renewed democratic project. It is in Europe that a political and strategic response to Western fragmentation could emerge, provided that it overcomes its internal divisions and asserts its voice on the international stage. Is this scenario possible in the medium term? What role does the war in Ukraine play in the EU’s strategic autonomy?

We are pleased to welcome Nicole Gnesotto, Vice-President of the Jacques Delors Institute and author of the book ‘Fractures in the West: How did we get here, how do we get out of it?’ (Éditions Odile Jacob), to present her recent work and discuss these fascinating geopolitical issues.
