[FR] Euroquestions #95 | ReArm Europe

The rearmament of the European Union in the current context of the war in Ukraine, heightened geopolitical tensions exacerbated by the return of Donald Trump, and budgetary difficulties in European countries presents several crucial challenges. On the one hand, it is essential for the EU to strengthen its defence capabilities in order to guarantee the security of its borders and citizens in the face of a direct military threat. On the other hand, tensions with Russia and the United States require a more assertive and coherent strategic stance to protect European interests on the international stage.
However, the budgetary constraints of Member States are complicating the implementation of this rearmament policy, forcing the EU to find innovative solutions, such as the ‘ReArm Europe’ plan, to finance its military ambitions without compromising other sectors that are equally essential for the future of the European Union, such as innovation, energy transition, education and health. How can these challenges be reconciled?

To discuss these topical issues, we are pleased to welcome Sylvie Matelly, economist and director of the Jacques Delors Institute.
