Sylvie Matelly

Advisor, Defence Economics

Sylvie Matelly is an economist, and Associate Professor at the Centre for Global Risks at SKEMA Business School. She is also an Advisor at the Jacques Delors Institute. From October 2023 to the end of August 2026, she served as Director of the Jacques Delors Institute. She previously served as Deputy Director of the Institute for International and Strategic Relations (IRIS) from 2016 to 2023.

She joined IRIS in 2001 as a researcher in international economics and defense, and is an expert on geopolitical and economic issues, particularly defense industries and policies, export controls, and corruption. Between 2009 and 2016, she was a professor at the Léonard de Vinci School of Management (Paris-La Défense), where she headed the Department of Economics, Finance, Law, and International Relations. Sylvie Matelly holds a PhD in international economics: she defended her thesis on the economic determinants of military spending at the Pierre Mendès France University in Grenoble in September 2000.

She has published several reference works: “Can Europe cope with globalization?” with Bastien Nivet (Éditions La Découverte, 2015), “L’économie tout simplement” (The Economy, Plain and Simple) in collaboration with Assen Slim (Eyrolles, 2023), and “Geopolitics of the Economy“ (Eyrolles, 2021).
