Background:
In recent years, the European Green Deal and, more broadly, all initiatives aimed at achieving carbon neutrality have faced a significant backlash. Considered by some to be too costly, too restrictive, or burdened by excessive regulation, climate ambitions now appear to be losing momentum. Yet, crisis after crisis – whether economic, social, energy-related, health-related, or environmental – one conclusion has become increasingly clear: our economic development model, based on mass consumption and hyper-globalized value chains, is being fundamentally called into question. It is both the source of these disruptions and the primary victim of the instability they generate.
Too often, the fight against climate change has been framed as being at odds with the preservation of our way of life. But what if, on the contrary, the sustainability of our daily lives depended directly on our ability to rethink our production model around the energy transition? This is where restoring sovereignty becomes a key lever. In Europe, our strategic dependencies are what make us vulnerable to every global shock. These same dependencies have fuelled deindustrialization and today expose the most vulnerable to precarity whenever inflation rises again.
To discuss these major challenges and explore sovereignty not as a form of withdrawal, but as a response to global instability and a source of collective resilience, the Jacques Delors Institute and Macif invite you to an exceptional roundtable discussion on 30 June.

What are the “European Encounters” from la Macif and the Jacques Delors Institute ?
In collaboration with the Jacques Delors Institute, la Macif organises three European Conversations each year dedicated to major issues currently debated in Brussels and likely to have a direct or indirect impact on its activities. Established several years ago, this partnership is now evolving with a renewed ambition: beyond bringing together the Macif community, these events aim to open discussions to a wider audience through accessible and inclusive conferences.
In 2026, three conferences will focus on key topics: the circular economy, European sovereignty and global health. They will take place at Macif’s premises, in the Keiko Amphitheatre in Issy-les-Moulineaux, easily accessible by public transport (RER C and Tramway T2 – Issy-Val de Seine stop). Each event will be followed by a cocktail reception, providing an opportunity to continue discussions and exchange with speakers and participants in a more informal setting.
