ENABLE.EU: Literature review

As the energy transition becomes an increasingly crucial issue within Member States and at European level, the ENABLE.EU project aims to contribute to political debates by using scientific methodology to identify the mechanisms needed to enable energy choices to contribute to the successful implementation of the Energy Union.
With this in mind, ENABLE.EU aims to identify – and thus better understand – the social and economic factors influencing individual and collective energy choices, with a particular focus on understanding changes in energy choice structures. This literature review lays the foundations for the project by reviewing the extensive research already published on these topics, highlighting their potential contributions and limitations.
Analysing more than 400 academic articles, this work demonstrates the diversity of disciplines through which the issues addressed by the ENABLE.EU project are approached, and thus the abundance of explanatory elements and conclusions. This literature review is divided into four parts: the first focuses on the economic factors influencing energy choices, the second reviews social and behavioural factors, the third analyses governance-related factors, and the fourth part lists the models used to analyse energy choices and highlights the interactions between the various factors identified in the literature.
