The rise of the Northern League in Italy, Jobbik in Hungary, the PVV in the Netherlands and the N-VA in Flanders: supporters of a tighter collective solidarity pact clearly emerged victorious from the 2010 elections. The sense of alienation that these preachers of exclusivity seek to dispel is that felt by native-born citizens with deep roots in their communities, who no longer feel ‘at home’ in their own cities.
Why is it so difficult to represent transcultural space in today’s Europe? How can we explain the gap between economic interdependence and narrow political consciousness? How does the combination of the dismantling of the Iron Curtain and the crossing of a threshold in economic globalisation affect the formulation of collective identities in the enlarged Union? These questions are at the heart of this study.
