[FR] Energy divides the European Union

Opinion piece in Il Correre Della Sera, 22  March 2006.

Meeting in Brussels, heads of state and government discussed major developments in the energy sector. Reports focus on how each leader defended their national champion, following the same old pattern of European disputes or, at best, seeking a compromise between different national interests.
Readers are left wondering whether consolidation among energy companies is necessary, whether the structure of this sector should be decided by governments or by the market, and whether energy policy falls within the remit of the EU or the Member States. In my opinion, two points for consideration may help to guide this debate.
