[FR] European Estates General: 3000 participants relaunch the debate

A few months ago, three organisations, Europanova, the European Movement France and Notre Europe, wanted the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome to be an opportunity for a real celebration in France, on a national scale and involving civil society in all its diversity. Of course, not everything is perfect today. And yet, even if there are still many steps to take, even if Europe is going through a period of uncertainty after the French and Dutch ‘no’ votes on the Constitutional Treaty, the European Union remains the most ambitious and idealistic political invention ever achieved. And the fact that Europe is enjoying one of the longest periods of peace in its history must be constantly remembered and admired. Admittedly, it is up to a new generation to take up the baton and write the next page in the history of European integration. But how can this be done without acknowledging what has been achieved, without thanking those who made it possible, and without drawing fresh inspiration from the revolutionary philosophy of the founding fathers, which enabled reconciliation through the creation of genuine solidarity?
The first European Forum, which launched the week of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome on Saturday 17 March in Lille, brought together more than 3,000 people and around 40 partners. Politicians, representatives of civil society, entrepreneurs, trade unionists, students and citizens of all ages and backgrounds came together to discuss a wide range of topics in plenary debates and workshops. In a village of associations, the organisations present were able to showcase their activities and show how participants could continue their European action in the future. A literary café brought together several authors of books on Europe, who answered questions from the public and signed copies of their books. Between workshops, participants left the packed rooms to enjoy a drink at the bar. The event was a great success, with a lively atmosphere and a wealth of debates and ideas on the theme of European pride.
