[FR] The Euro as seen by citizens who do not yet have it

Of the twenty-seven countries in the European Union, nineteen have adopted the euro. Seven others are expected to do so – this is an obligation arising from a Member State’s accession to the EU, provided that it meets the criteria set out in the Maastricht Treaty. The only exception is Denmark, which, like the United Kingdom at the time, obtained an opt-out clause in the provisions of this treaty.

The European Commission regularly asks a question in its Standard Eurobarometer surveys about support for ‘a European economic and monetary union with a single currency, the euro’. It also recently conducted a Flash Eurobarometer survey, which provides a more comprehensive picture of the seven countries set to join the euro area in the future. We report on the main results here.
