Riccardo Perissich

Former European Commission Director General for Industry, Executive Vice President of the Italian branch of the Council for the United States and Italy.

Riccardo Perissich was appointed Executive Vice President of the Italian branch of the Council for the United States and Italy at the beginning of 2010. He is a member of the Board of Directors of CoeClerici, the Italian shipping company and Senior Advisor of APCO Worldwide.

After starting his career as a business consultant, Mr. Perissich joined the Italian Institute of International Affairs in 1966, where he headed research on the European Community and then named Deputy Director. In 1970, he moved to Brussels to begin a 25-year career at the European Commission, serving as chief of staff for a succession of four commissioners, and as Deputy Director General of the Directorate General for the Internal Market and Industry. In 1990 he became Director General for Industry, until his retirement in 1994.

Mr. Perissich then joined Pirelli, serving as Director of public and economic affairs and member of the management board until 2001. From 2001 to 2006 he supervised corporate public and economic affairs at Telecom Italia and he concurrently coordinated institutional relations at Pirelli. Mr. Perissich was also a member of Telecom Italia Mobile’s management board, and he held the position of chairman of Telecomitalia Media (2002 – 2007).

While working at Telecom Italia, Perissich was a member of the management council of Confindustria (Confederation of Italian Industry) and Assolombarda (Lombardy industrial association), Vice Chairman of the Industrial League of Rome, the Italian Real Estate Industry Association, the National Federation of Radio and Television, and was a board member of the Treccani Encyclopedia.

Perissich is the author of L’Unione europea, una storia non ufficiale (2008), with a preface by Giorgio Napolitano, President of Italy, and winner of the Capalbio Prize. He is a regular contributor to Italian and foreign publications on European and international politics. In 2012 he published is first novel, Le Regole del Gioco (Longanesi). A dual Italian and French citizen, Perissich is a Chevalier des arts et des lettres. He is a member of Aspen Institute Italia, International Institute for Strategic Studies, and the Italian Institute of International Affairs.

He is married and has one son.
