What political and institutional evolutions for the EU and the EMU?
This Synthesis from Martina Menghi focuses on the debate on competences, institutional reforms and democracy in the context of the European Forum of Think Tanks, organised by Notre Europe and the Centro Studi sul Federalismo, on September 18 and 19.
The 2014 edition of the European Forum of Think Tanks was organised by Notre Europe – Jacques Delors Institute and the Centro Studi sul Federalismo on 18-19 September in Turin.
Thirty-eight participants from more than 15 countries, including national and European politicians, as well as leaders from the economic sector, were able to take part in the discussion.
Political and institutional evolutions of the European Union, in the context of the economic crisis and current institutional changes, notably the European Parliament’s elections, were analysed along with the European Council’s designation of the Commission president candidate from the party with a relative majority in the European Parliament.
Martina Menghi, research assistant at Notre Europe – Jacques Delors Institute, summarised the discussion around three main questions:
1. How to deepen the euro area while consolidating the EU?
2. Is a reform of the European institutions necessary?
3. How to further democratise the European institutional system?
