Pierre Mirel is Honorary Director General at the European Commission. A large part of his long career at this institution was devoted to issues related to the accession of Central and Eastern European countries to the European Union. After 2004, he focused mainly on the Western Balkans region, including as Director for Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and the Kosovo files. He continues to travel frequently to the Balkans, to participate in seminars and to provide voluntary training.
His activities dedicated to EU enlargement issues and the Western Balkans also include teaching at Sciences Po from 2010 to 2022, contributing to the book Geopolitics of Democratisation: Europe and its Neighbours (Presses de Sciences Po, 2014) and writing numerous articles and policy papers.
