On Sunday 18th September, the European Commission proposed a 7.5bn cut from Hungary´s EU funds in application of the rule of law conditionality mechanism. It is now up to Member States to take a decision within maximum three months. This proposal arrives at the moment when the Parliament has declared Hungary a “hybrid regime of electoral autocracy” and with the EU´s executive still blocking the adoption of the Hungarian recovery plan over similar rule of law and corruption concerns.
We are pleased to welcome our Senior research fellow, Eulalia Rubio, who will discuss what can we expect from the application of the rule of law conditionality against Hungary and the implications this may have in the context of the long ‘rule of law’ clash between the EU and Hungary.
