On 16 October 2012, Notre Europe – Jacques Delors Institute organised a conference entitled “Competition – Cooperation – Solidarity: facing the new EU challenges”. The conference took place in Brussels, in presence of numerous European high-ranking personalities.

António Vitorino, the President of Notre Europe – Jacques Delors Institute pronounced the introductory speech that we publish today as a tribune.

António Vitorino looks back on the way in which the formula “Competition that stimulates, cooperation that strengthens, and solidarity that unites” shaped the construction of Europe, and how this formula inspired and  linked to the three thematic debates chosen for the conference: the EMU,
the “internal market – budget” and the social dimension of the EU.
