Between amputation and strengthening: what Brexit?

Thierry Chopin, special adviser at the Jacques Delors Institute and professor of political science at the Catholic University of Lille (ESPOL), analyzes what could be the contours of the future relationship between the EU and the United Kingdom.

Brexit is a bad thing for the EU: it represents an amputation, in terms of economic, political and strategic weight, for the EU. An exit from the United Kingdom also appears as a symbol of disunity, in a context where the Union and its states need unity and cohesion to cope with the multiple shocks that affect them. However, opinion polls conducted following the British referendum suggest that public opinion has become more favorable to participation in this Union. So between amputation and strengthening of the unity of the EU: what Brexit? What future relations between the EU and Britain?
