Reading Note. Ed. Fayard, Paris, 2005, 365 pp. Only in FrenchLe sous-titre du livre d’Alain Touraine reflète très exactement les ambitions de cet ouvrage, mais aussi ses limites. Le sociologue annonce d’emblée qu’il s’agit pour lui de faire le point sur l’évolution de nos sociétés européennes car la grille de lecture qu’il a utilisée naguère et qui se focalisait sur les mouvements sociaux et leurs oppositions n’est plus valable. Replaçant son propos dans l’histoire longue, il postule qu’après une première phase où « tout était politique », lors de l’avènement des démocraties parlementaires au XIXème siècle, et une seconde période où « tout était social et économique », la relation au travail étant le pivot des identités, nous entrons dans un nouveau paradigme où la dimension culturelle devient essentielle.
